What is hawthorne's attitude towards dimmesdale?

I think he wants us to feel slight sympathy for him and yet not know him at all. To clarify; I don't think Hawthorne really knows the character and perhaps this is reflected by the fact that when the reader finishes they don't really know him either. Dimmesdale is an enigma.
