I just tried programming an RCA universal remote but it isn't working?

alrighty, so i just did everything in the directions correctly and the tv did shut off just like it said it would, but after the tv shuts off the remote is no long programmed to the tv (or so it seems) because the remote does not control the tv afterwards.
